After firing off this list, he paused for a moment and took a sip of his tea. I wrote a couple more notes and then put down my pen. Jim set his cup down and then continued.

“You see, Stanley. I have been fortunate enough to be a recipient of The Message, but if I did not apply the principle of personal initiative to my life on a regular basis, I would still be sitting in that 9x12-foot room. Yes, it is scary. Yes, it will be hard work, but nothing that comes easy in life is worth having.

“Because I have applied the habit of personal initiative in my life, I have been able to do many great things. After I lost my eyesight, I realized that I would not be able to enjoy movies anymore since they are such a visual medium. I got the idea that if a movie could have a narrator describing what is being shown onscreen, blind or visually impaired people would be able to enjoy television or movies just as seeing people do. I decided that something had to be done about it, and I was the guy that was going to do it.

“With the help of my wife Crystal and my business partner Kathy Harper, we formed the Narrative Television Network. This company was formed to provide the service of narrating television shows and movies for the 13 million blind and visually impaired people in the United States today and millions more around the world. In doing this I have been able to meet hundreds of high profile people and share their stories with my audience. Through my talk show, I had the pleasure to interview many great people such as: Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Michael Douglas, and many others.

“We were awarded an Emmy for our creation of the narrative process. I have spoken to over 4 million people over the past 15 years through my speaking engagements.

“A few years back, I wrote a book called The Ultimate Gift. It has been embraced by the public and has sold over 5 million copies. In 2005, it was made into a feature film staring the great James Garner. The movie has been shown around the world in many different languages and has sold many millions of copies. I write a weekly column that is in over 400 newspapers every week and read by over 3 million people. All of this is possible because I applied the principle of personal initiative.

“Please understand I am not telling you all of this to try to impress you or brag about my accomplishments. I tell this to prove to you that the principle and The Message work. This same amount of success is available to anyone and everyone who is willing to apply it in their lives. Stanley, you now have an opportunity to change the world around you with The Message. Please don’t take it lightly.”
